Experience

John joined Cumpston Sarjeant as a consulting actuary in July 2003. John specialises in general insurance compensation arrangements, defined benefit superannuation and other employee benefits.

John's general insurance expertise is predominantly in workers compensation as well as dust disease and severe injury compensation, where he acts as both a primary actuary to schemes and as a reviewing actuary. John has a long history of involvement with NSW compensation arrangements.

Advice to defined benefit superannuation funds includes valuation and compliance tasks, asset/liability modelling, mortality and other decrement investigations and policy development. John has acted as an expert witness in defined benefit superannuation matters. John prepares valuations of employee benefits such as long service leave, annual leave and sick leave.

John was employed with the NSW Government Actuary Office from 1990 to 2003, initially as a university cadet, and then full time from 1994. He was the Assistant Government Actuary from 1996. He was involved in the valuation of government superannuation schemes, friendly societies and employee entitlements such as long service leave and sick leave.

In addition to actuarial work, John maintains an active scientific research and communication program, predominantly dealing with community ecology. He has published several peer-reviewed scientific articles and many other general articles in this area. John is an Honorary Fellow at the Research Institute for the Environment and Livelihoods, Charles Darwin University.
